The first truly modern Derian destroyer, the Freeman class is the fastest class of destroyer in the world. Trading armor protection for great speed and firepower, the Freeman class ships fit perfectly into the "fast defense" style of warfare practiced by the Maritime Defense Forces. Deployed in squadrons of five ships, Freeman class vessels are designed to act as a "wolfpack", working together to destroy larger vessels. As part of the DMDF's wartime "battleship hunter" forces, the Freeman class vessels would be tasked to target the largest enemy vessels first, destroying battleships and carriers with volleys of well-aimed torpedoes.

These ships are named for famous Derian scientists, generals, doctors, and in the case of the Saint Olga, the Marianist Patron Saint of sailors.
