Originally commisioned to be the centerpieces of the Derian fleet, the two ships of the Saint Rian class were put in drydock due to military budget cuts. However, with massive donations of military bonds and funding increases from President Woodward, these two unique ships were recently re-launched. The Saint Rian is equipped with a massive main armament of nine eighteen inch guns, while her sister, the Saint Annabel is equipped with six of that type to accomodate for a RAE array and greater anti-aircraft armament. Some of the fastest and most heavily armed ships of the Derian navy, these ships were placed into active service as opposed to the reserve fleet due to their combat capability.
These ships' massive 18 inch guns have come under criticism from foreign detractors, calling them "unecessary", "unreliable", and "a waste of resources". However, modern propellants and projectiles have ensured the great reliability of these weapons and Woodward justified the utilization of these weapons in a religiously-charged speech, calling them "A shining sword with which to strike down the heathen enemies of Deria". To further add to the religious aura surrounding these vessels, High Priest Xavier Mjeltin consecrated them both with holy water and said prayers of protection over them before their simultaneous launch.
