Rio Palmas
From AuroraWiki
Rio Palmas is a river flowing north to south along the western borders of Fernandina and Las Palmas. The river empties into the Abecean Ocean.
Although navigable along much of its route adjacent to Las Palmas, the river has too many sharp bends for it to be usable to vessels of any substantial size. It is, nonetheless, a significant transport route for those along its shores. Agricultural irrigation and drinking water represent the largest uses for the Rio Palmas.
Rapids just below the Las Palmas municipality were eliminated in 2093 with the construction of a lock and diversion channel that flows through a hydro-electric generating station. While the lock has never been profitable, the generating station provides electricity to the city and eliminates the need to import coal. The difference is elevations between the upper and lower portions at the lock is 2.4 m (8 ft).
