The Democratic Republican Insurrection (occasionally "Front" instead of "Insurrection") is the major republican anti-government movement in communalist Sinoptikon located in central-western Miotus.

Contents

History

For the past 23 years, Sinoptikon has been in turmoil. By 2080 a parliamentary socialist republic with a decent level of freedom had slid into an outright oligarchy of six political extended families, the Ekto'oikos. Their villainous behavior resulted in a 2091 revolt. It was a popular uprising, with some outside help from sympathetic neighboring republics. The Army thankfully remained uninvolved.

Communalists had a base in the parliament; without the Ekto'oikos' firm control, they quickly sidelined the two populist leaders of the revolution and set up moderate communalist republic. Socialists went along with the Communality Group, and bought into their plans. Democratic / capitalist factions withheld support, but were steamrollered in the gleeful ousting of the Ekto's.

Between 2092 and today the parliament has been neutered into a rubber-stamp authority for the Communalists' party. The corruption under the Ekto'oikos has been traded for a dogmatic hard-line communalist regime, in which even less individual freedom is possible. The democratic faction of parliament had no place in the People's Assembly, and today is represented there by a token four old men, cowed by the vigorous operation of a very redistributionist hierarchy. The real democratic types fled, and formed the nucleus of today's Insurrection..

The DRI at first did not get much official attention. In twenty years the DRI has become a virtual second national government, controlling some twenty to thirty-five percent of the land, and over twenty percent of the populace. Their claim is for all of Sinoptikon, with no extension into neighboring Nolophon Caletica, unlike the communalists. The statistics quoted are those for just Sinoptikon proper. No nation off of Miotus has recognized the DemRepubs as a real government, though a number supply them with arms and supplies. Several neighboring Heloan nations provide recognition (quietly) and/or support (silently).

Governance

Since the 2091 revolt Sinoptikon's communalist government has tried to extend its control over the the entire nation. The DRI just as vigorously resists, and has in some areas extended its own control. Crythea in the south is an example of this, having changed hands four times in what amounts to a full-up civil war.

The old Sinoptical Republic remains as the framework for the DemRepubs' governance. De facto governors exist for four areas termed "zones' by the DRI, another five having "governors in exile" holding positions in the DRI parliament. The head of the DRI is its Prodoc (roughly, "president"), Dotes Kanakares. The appearance and sometimes the fact of separation of civilian and military authority is maintained. The prior Prodoc was also civilian, the one before that as well as the first one were military men operating out of uniform but with fairly direct army control.

To avoid giving the communalists a target, there is no fixed DRI "capital".

Subdivisions

The nine subdivisions of the Sinoptiks are referred to as zones by the DRI. The central communalist government entirely dominates Myrclades and Santudion on the northern coast, and Phryntala on the Onkyios River. DRI governors have strong control in Andrespetikon, Narsis, Antixisa, and Kripleptikon. Neither government has a good handle on Helubris or Panaelaeon.

Geography and Climate

Elevations in Sinoptikon range from sea level along the Topal Sea coast to over 3,000 meters in the country's eastern Pindolikos Mountains. Winters range from mild along the coast to severe in the inland mountains. Summers are generally mild across the entire territory.

The Onkyios River forms the southeastern border of Sinoptikon and the limit of DemRepub claims there. The Andemos River forms most of the northern border of Sinoptikon, and is where DemRepub claims stop. Nolophon Caletica across the Andemos "occupies" some land the Sinoptics want, hence the ongoing low-grade war between the two nations. DemRepubs and Nolophoneys share some goals there, but do not outright coordinate operations against the communalists. The Andemos valley is fertile, and would be productive were it not for the warfare.

Agriculture

Sinoptikon grows nearly enough food for its citizens. Dem Repubs do not of course share in an fair distribution of that produce, and must import some supplies from Nolophon Caletica and other neighboring nations. They also raid communalist depots for food as well as manufactured goods. Much of the arable land that would wisely be planted in grain is instead devoted to cotton plantations by the communalists. In the countryside, no matter which area of control, people are raise minor livestock, vegetables, and fruits. Goats and chickens are more common than cattle. Garlic-roasted rabbit is the national dish, the rabbit being also a bit of a national (DRI) symbol. That is odd, considering it is prey for the more typical Heloan national symbol of an owl, but the DRI play up its quickness and cleverness, as ingrained in local folk tales. Both areas of Sinoptikon have the olives, figs, and grapes that are Heloan staples.

Economy

Because of the internal strife and the long-standing conflict between Sinoptikon and neighboring Nolophon Caletica , the national economy is underperforming. Communalist military spending and the relative scarcity of consumer goods results in severe strain on the Sinoptik contentment. The Sinoptikon currency, the Scrip, is not worth much outside of Sinoptikon proper. It has more value among the enemies of the central government, the DRI, than it does with neighboring nations. The insurrectionists neither print nor mint their own money, leaving them free to leech whatever portion of the Sinoptikon economy that they can. Barter is common. So is the use of foreign coin, though the central government technically outlaws it. DRI payroll is doled out in whatever coin a given area can use - Nolophoney Ettae, Communalist Scrip, other Heloan coin, or even Antaran money.

Sinoptikon has deposits of silver whose mining stretches back at least fifteen hundred years. Most mines are in DRI controlled areas, and are not presently worked, or are not worked efficiently. Many government raids into the highlands are aimed more at denying the Democratic Republicans use of these mines than at any attempt to regain territory.

Demographics

Ethnically, the Sinoptiks are almost universally Heloan. Communalist practice discriminates against non-Heloan minorities with a lack of access to fundamental services such as health care, education, housing, and even the right to work. The DRI welcomes outsiders, but understandably attracts few from outside Sinoptikon. They do give sanctuary to those run out of communalist areas. Since 2100 there has been a net drop in population of Sinoptikon, as some citizens emigrated to escape the conflicts, and others joined the DRI. The statistics stated, population 28 million, is an attempt to count all of both groups' people within the legal Sinoptik borders.

Culture

Most Sinoptiks cannot enjoy such luxuries as the State Opera of Sinoptikon (SOS) or the National Oceanography Synoptik Technological Research Aquarium and Library (NOSTRAL). Local festivals are commonplace and may date back longer than three or four governments. Every Sinoptik - republican or communalist - loves a gyro. Communalist music encompasses wild dance tunes and drawn-out lyric sagas - in contrast to those, the DemRepubs support and treasure traditional folk music and dance.

Military

The Synoptik Communalist Armed Minions is the army of the communalists. It is also a prime recruiting ground for the DemRepub Forces, thanks to lousy treatment of the regular communalist soldiers by the high-and-mighty officer corps. The Democratic Republican Insurrection military force operates across about a third of Sinoptikon. Both groups are supplied from abroad, as well as building or stealing local weaponry. The Minions' generally poor training is partly made up for by their large numbers. The DRI Force is smaller in number, but much more dedicated. Unlike the Minions, the DRI Force recruits immediately take a step up in prosperity, with some guarantee of food and clothing, and even semi-regular pay.

Current Issues

The DemRepub Insurgency and the dispute with Nolophon are Communalist Sinoptikon's two biggest problems. The DRI itself has only the government to worry about... and poor employment, insufficient suupplies, poor medical care, lagging education, and the like.
