Autoroute
From AuroraWiki
An Autoroute is a dual carriageway, limited access super highway in Odessa. Although well engineered and constructed, traffic remains relatively light on the autoroutes. The majority of people and goods move across Odessa by rail.
Design
Odessa's Militaria initiated the design of the autoroute system, largely to provide an additional means for quick movement of military forces and materiel. Standard design characteristics include:
- Roadway surfaces made of concrete for strength and longevity
- Dual carriageways, separating each direction of travel from the other by a median
- Multiple lanes, usually 2 and sometimes 3, in each direction of travel
- Limited access, permitting joining or exiting an autoroute only at designated interchanges
- Long acceleration and deceleration lanes at entry and exit points
- Larger turning radii and reduced grades than commonly found on standard highways
- Periodic rest areas and scenic overlooks to enhance the driving experience
- Regularly spaced service plazas with concessions offering food, fuel, and lodging
Routing
A quick look at the autoroute system map yields two key points. First, autoroutes run along Odessa's frontiers, providing a sort of beltway around the country. Second, several autoroutes provide faster avenues of travel by crossing through Odessa between autoroutes.
The autoroute numbering scheme consists of odd numbers for generally north-south routes and even numbers for generally east-west routes. Numbering increases west to east and north to south. The various routes are:
- A1—Northpoint junction with A9 (Norpen) to Westpoint junction with A8 (Westland)
- A2—Portsmouth junction with A1 (Winward) to Eastbay (Leeland)
- A3—Junction with A1 west of Midvale (Midland) to junction with A8 north of Grand Rapids (Hizon)
- A6—Junction with A1 north of Portage (Lopatch) to junction with A9 at Eastmont (Solpeer)
- A7—Novi junction with A6, concurrent with A3 until Mortonville (Demesne) to junctions with A9 and A39 at Firston (National Capital Region)
- A8—Westpoint junction with A1 (Westland) to Ferno Pass junction with A9 (Solpeer)
- A9—Northpoint junction with A1 (Norpen) to Ferno Pass junction with A1 (Sopeer)
- A18—Broadward Bay junction with A1 (Broadmoor) to Gulfton junction with A9 (Broadmoor)
- A19—Midwin junction with A2 (Winward) to Norlee junction with A9 (Norpen)
- A39—North Midvale junction with A1 (Midland) to Firston junctions with A7 and A9 (National Capital Region)
