The Socialist Republic of Anadyr is a Communalist country on the continent of Shurku. It is, along with neighboring Baikal, one of the coldest, most isolated nations on Aurora. Nonetheless, varying degrees of human civilization have existed in what is now Anadyr for centuries.

History

Pre-history

Archaelogical evidence suggests that the earliest inhabitants of Anadyr (and all of the southern portion of the Shurkan continent) were nomadic hunters who followed the migratory patterns of deer and elk and supplemented their diet with what little vegetation they could gather. Depending on the climatic period, these nomadic tribes also hunted whales and seals (depending on the prevalence of sea ice). After the climate shifted and ice sheets covered nearly all of southern Shurku, humans moved north for the next two hundred years or so. When the ice receded, humans once more followed migrating prey animals back into what is now Anadyr.

Tribal System and the Kingdom of Anadyr

As the climate warmed, the hunter-gatherers began to form more permanent settlements at the expense of their nomadic past. These new villages coalesced into tribes based on similar methods of survival (fishing villages, wheat and rye growing settlements, etc.). Also, around this time, the people of this region began to domesticate and farm reindeer, using the animals for their meat, hides, milk, and as a means of transportation.

The warming climate and more sedentary lifestyles of the former nomads led to the development of several tribes that covered vast tracts of land. The tribes were linked based on economic needs at first but soon began to identify as cohesive units with cultural and kinship links. The most powerful of the tribes were the Omsurtskoe. After almost a century of relatively peaceful coexistence, an Omsurtskoe chieftain, Anad Groll, set out to conquer the neighboring tribes. Following a decisive military campaign, Anad Groll consolidated power and formed the Kingdom of Anadyr (meaning "land of Anad" in Anadyri).

Industrialization and Exploitation

For the next hundred and fifty years, Anadyr remained relatively isolated. When vast quantities of coal were discovered in the 20th century, however, many foreign powers invested money in exploiting the rich natural resoures. The Kingdom, still ruled by the Groll dynasty, was eager to allow foreign interference in its national affairs as long as it reaped at least some of the benefits. In effect, foreign powers were given free reign to pursue their business ventures as long as the monarch received a hefty kickback. The majority of Anadyris lived in poverty, working for the most part as subsistence farmers, fishermen, and reindeer herders; however, the coal industry required cheap labor, and overnight factories and coal mines were filled with Anadyris from the countryside. The work was backbreaking, the pay almost nothing, and the monarch was quite content to ignore the deplorable conditions as long as foreign investment still flowed into the kingdom.

Coal factories are often considered to be the birthplace of the democracy movement in Anadyr due to the frequent strikes and walkouts that precipitated the revolution.

Agitation, Revolution, and the Socialist Republic

The harsh conditions under which the Anadyri masses lived and toiled led to increasingly tense relations between the ruling class (and their foreign backers) and the oppressed workers. The political system was dictatorial: the Groll kings, for the most part, ruled by decree. The lone democratic exception was a Royal Parliament (Vezbaiga Narameym); however, only 65% of Anadyri men could vote and the king controlled the Parliament's actions through an unquestioned veto power. Still, a movement for democratic change did spring up in larger Anadyri industrial centers and spread throughout the country.

The movement was a coalition of progressive parties and labor unions and became known as the Anadyr Front for Democracy (AFD). One of dozens of leftist factions within the AFD, the Anadyr Communalist Workers' Party was one of the few that advocated military action. For the most part, however, moderate political attitudes set the tone for the AFD and activism was limited to general strikes, walk outs, and protest marches. Foreign backers of the Groll regime became nervous and pushed for stronger royal action when dealing with the AFD. The monarch answered with heavyhanded repression; deadly force was used to end protests, the Parliament was dissolved, curfews were instituted, and any AFD sympathizers were jailed, tortured, and executed.

During this period, later termed the "Royal Terror," the Communalist Workers' Party became increasingly vocal within the AFD and soon, many moderates began to favor military action and a "war of national liberation." A series of highly coordinated guerrilla attacks, a particularly brutal winter, and a protracted genral strike caused a massive exodus of foreign capital and enflamed popular sentiment against the monarchy. The king's military forces, starving and seeing more and more that they were on the losing side, defected en masse. Weapons shipments from Communalist allies (namely Pravnicka and to a lesser extent Fernandina) turned the tide. The Socialist Republic of Anadyr was formally declared January 26, 2101.

On January 19, 2101, the king and the royal family fled to nearby Baikal and from there to the North Shurkan Union and ultimately settled in Translithania.

Government and Politics

Politics in Anadyr take place within the framework of a single-party, Communalist state. While legally there are separate political parties and entities, they all are affiliated with the Anadyr Front for Democracy which is effectively under the control of the Anadyr Communalist Workers' Party. Immediately following the successful revolt against the king, the ACWP took the lead in the reconstruction of the country. After the first truly democratic elections took place in March of 2101, the ACWP won an absolute majority in the new National Assembly. From this position on top, they slowly but surely solidified their hold over Anadyri politics. A series of purges of political opponents and delicate maneuvering guaranteed the ACWP's top position within the AFD. Eventually the Anadyri constitution proclaimed, "the Anadyr Communalist Workers' Party is the leader of the revolutionary movement, dutifully supported by the other patriotic mass-movements of the Anadyr Front for Democracy."

Elections are held regularly, and candidates do in fact compete for votes; however, every candidate must be approved beforehand by the Communalist leadership, and the strict balance of seats awarded to the various factions of the AFD is always maintained.

Composition of the National Assembly

All of the following parties are part of the pro-government umbrella movement, the Anadyr Front for Democracy (Front om Demokrazishkoye Anadyr-mesz).

There are a number of other "mass-movements" that are affiliated with the AFD that do not participate actively in the National Assembly, such as the Anadyr Pathfinders Youth Movement, International Workingman's Union, and the Movement for Third World Solidarity. Still, these organizations participate in the yearly meeting of AFD members which in turn influences national policy.

As a Communalist nation, the Anadyri economy is almost entirely under state control. Different directorates and committees within the government oversee production of both heavy and light industry as well as consumer goods. There is extensive trade with other Communalist states. However, the coal industry continues to boom in Anadyr and countries all over Aurora import Anadyri coal.
