Yomhany's present name echoes its status as one of the most active municipalities with strong Yom Ethnic Republic components. Perhaps sixty percent of the city's residents clain Yom heritage - many mixed. Among the insular Yom, that alone is unusual. As usual, citizens' ethnicities and languages overlap, but the Yom comprise the largest percentage. Levante and Mongral follow, with of course a smattereing of other folk. Languages have a similar distribution in Yomhany and environs - Loirisian the largest number of speakers (thanks to its popularity as second and third tongue), then Yommanisch, then Ris and Maansi in equal parts, then Nopalcany. There are relatively few Skyaav speakers, no doubt thanks to the Skyaav majority in nearby Dajos.

The Yom presence in the city is settled, but once was contentious. In Niverhazy, the city's name through the latter 1300's, the city fathers repeatedly tried to run the Yom out of town. They were sometimes prevented from owning land, other times not permitted to buy bread, or hold trading and transport jobs, their "ethnic specialty". None of that was effective long-term. During the period of the Duchy of Hajel, the Duke in Hajel City actually supported the Yom in Niverhazy -- to get them out of his own city.

Yomhany looks modern for a city with 300-year roots. Situated in the Storm Band, it has experienced repeated forced urban renewal. Numerous tornados have struck the city - as many as five in one year (1488). In 1471 a twister estimated to be an F5 on today's scale plowed a 350-meter wide track right through the city center, leaving rubble and fires. Over 470 people lost their lives, and it took two decades to really recover. The fires following that storm gave rise to strong fire-resistant and wind resistant building practices. Repeated floods have affected a wider area than individual tornados, but have not done as much damage.

As recently as the dissolution of Lucco Hovy (1461), Yomhany was an obscure minor city in some Haromszeki republic or other. Most Haromszekis couldn't have placed it on a map. Lately though it has picked up a niche significance. Across the Confederation many hundreds of agriculture-related companies' processed products are labelled "packaged in Yomhany". The stereotypical Yom interest in transport and trading is no lie -- millions of railway carloads of enter Yomhany as bulk and leave as neat cans and boxes, brightly labelled. The last time a survey of origins was attempted, not even half the foodstuffs shipped from Yomhany were grown in Plochytc, let alone in the Locci counties nearest the city.
