The Schwerdtan Military Services (in Teuvian:Wehrdiensten) are multi-purpose combat-capable forces that are prepared for the broad range of tasks assigned to them. The primary purpose of the Military Services is to protect Schwerdt from direct military threat.

Roles that the Military Services fulfill include:

  • Surveillance and control of Schwerdtan territory, airspace, and maritime approaches;
  • Combat and interdiction operations;
  • Observation, peacekeeping, and peace-enforcement;
  • Mine-clearance and protection of displaced persons;
  • Civil defense and protection of infrastructure;
  • Search and rescue; and
  • Disaster relief.

As well as being equipped to deal with terrorist and asymmetrical threats in Schwerdt and abroad, the Military Services support the civil authorities with respect to environmental surveillance, illegal immigration, and drug-trafficking.

Official vessels (military and law enforcement) of Schwerdt fly the so-called naval ensign in place of the traditional national flag.

Unified Command

Schwerdt's military is structured to maximise the principle of unity of command, which Sun Tzu espoused over 2,000 years ago. Despite universal acceptance of this principle, among major militaries, only Schwerdt functions within the construct of unified command. The military force is, thus, organised along functional or geographic lines. Most militaries use combined arms, multi-service task forces, called joint operations. In Schwerdt, the Military Services are structured to operate in this manner as a normal course. As a result, cooperation among land, air, and sea forces is institutionalised and permanent rather than ad hoc and transitory.

High Command of the Military Services

The Chancellor and Marshal of the Realm is the commander-in-chief of the Military Services. In this role, he is assisted by the Military Council of the Realm (Reichswehrrat), which is chaired by the Chief of Military Operations. The chiefs of the component commands (Home Defense, Overseas, Aerospace, and Military Support) are the key members of the Reichswehrrat. These comprise the so-called National Command Authorities.

In support of the National Command Authorities is the Great General Staff, the best-known element of the High Command of the Military Services (Oberkommando der Wehrdiensten or OKW). As with General Staffs of the subordinate commands and lower echelons, the Great General Staff provides expertise in planning operations, logistics, and interpreting information.

Home Defense

The High Command of Home Defense (Oberkommando den Heimwehr or OKW) has charge of protecting the homeland. Under the unified command scheme, this includes land and air defense as well as coastal protection.

Overseas Forces

High seas fleets are the key elements of the High Command of Overseas Forces (Oberkommando den Auslandswaffe or OKA). Land and air forces operating outside of Schwerdt's territorial areas fall under the jurisdiction of this command, however.

Aerospace Forces

Although the Home Defense and Overseas Forces Commands have integral air defense capability, the strategic air and space forces operate through command and control of the High Command of Aerospace Forces (Oberkommando des Luftwaffe or OKL). In this manner, the principle of economy of force is adhered to by eliminating redundancy while ensuring there are adequate resources to accomplish required missions. Long-range aerial weapon system delivery, transport, and strategic intelligence services are the key functions of this Command.

Military Support

The High Command of Military Support (Oberkommando den Militarstütze or OKM) provides cross-command support services, including logistics, personnel, medical services, and administrative functions.

Force Structure

Schwerdt's military operational concepts are the natural progression of the integration of doctrine and technology. The military forces are organised to exploit the battle-proven doctrines of the decisive point—Schwerpunkt— and strategic envelopment—Kesselschlacht. This adaptive and responsive structure, based on sound military principles, gives Schwerdt's armed forces superior capability in facing traditional foes as well as assymetrical threats.

Strategic Forces

Having rapid global reach, the Strategic Air Service (SAS) provides reconnaisance, deterrence, and first-strike capabilities in fulfillment of Schwerdt's national military objectives.

Schwerdt's fleets serve both tactical and strategic roles. Organised into groups, the ocean-going vessels provide a strategic deterrence but, alongside other forces, can also become engaged directly with in a military operational zone (op-z).

Tactical Formations

With regard to land operations, the division are the main tactical formation. The division have the necessary maneuver regiments and support elements to accomplish assigned missions. There are two primary division structures: integrated triple capacity and rapid deployment.

The group is the major sea-going formation. Each is organised to maximise firepower and ensure essential capabilities are present to accomplish assigned missions. While the fleets support tactical operations, they are also part of the strategic forces.

Alignment of tactical air elements with their supported land and sea elements through a common chain of command yields a unity of effort that is a combat multiplier. Focused, streamlined logistics provide the battle commander with flexibility and enhanced capability. The result is greater responsiveness in battle.

Regiments—Formations of Action

The regiment is the primary formation of action in that it is designed and equipped to function independently.

"InTriCap" Regiment

Most of Schwerdt's regimtents are organised as integrated triple capability ("intricap") formations. At each level, ground maneuver elements consist of a mix of armored and mechanised infantry with appropriate fire support. At the platoon and company level, fire support consists of mortars, but artillery systems are part of battalion and regimental orders of battle.

Combat aviation, the third maneuver element, is part of the structure at battalion and higher. Thus, the intricap formation achieves superior combat power even when its counterpart in other militaries has more infantry or armor.

"RaDe" Regiment

The Rapid Deployment ("RaDe") regiment is a relatively light force. Utilising wheeled armored vehicles and combat aviation, RaDe formations can be quickly transported to anywhere on Scandia within a very short period.

Light and lethal, the force has adequate firepower to dominate the battlefield and its speed permits exploitation of circumstances. This results in early securing of the initiative and achieving of victory.
