- This article is about the waterways agency of Schwerdt. The term "Wasserbahnen" is also used to refer to Schwerdt's navigable waterways network.
Schwerdt has an extensive network of navigable rivers and canals which are under the authority of Wasserbahnen eV, a government corporation within Transport Schwerdt. The navigable waterways system includes natural rivers, dredged rivers, lakes, and canals and locks.
Wasserbahnen is also responsible for flood control through its dams, many of which also generate electricity by using the water flow. The agency operates out of head offices in Kapitalstadt and has regional offices in each Land (state) and field offices at dozens of other locations. Organizationally, the agency consists of the following functional groups:
- Central Services—administration, accounting and finance, legal and public affairs, procurement and logistics
- Waterways Engineering—hydrology, geology, and infrastructure planning and design
- Waterways Management—flood control, environmental protection, and recreation
- Waterways Maintenance—dredging and infrastructure maintenance and repair
- Waterways Operations—traffic management, power generation, and lock operations
