The War infobox template provides an easy way to present key information in a standard format about an armed conflict or war.

Usage

The complete infobox actually consists of two or three component templates intended to be used together, although they can be used separately. To display properly, the infobox must be wrapped between the {{Frame begin}} and {{Frame end}} templates.

To insert the full infobox in an article, copy and paste the following at the beginning of the page. Be sure to replace yourinfo with the appropriate information.

{{Frame begin}}
{{War infobox
| conflict = yourinfo
| partof = yourinfo
| image = yourinfo
| caption = yourinfo
| date = yourinfo
| location = yourinfo
| result = yourinfo
|}}
{{War combatants infobox
| combatant1 = yourinfo
| combatant2 = yourinfo
| commander1 = yourinfo
| commander2 = yourinfo
| strength1 = yourinfo
| strength2 = yourinfo
| casualties1 = yourinfo
| casualties2 = yourinfo
|}}
{{Infobox notes
| notes = yourinfo
}}
{{Frame end}}

Note: If you use an image that is less than 300 pixels wide, you can include the size = yourinfo parameter after the image file name to tell the template to display the image at the width you specify.

Paramters

All parameters will accept standard wiki and external linking (double or single brackets respectively) and other text formatting except the image (image and size) parameters. Although no parameter is mandatory, they will be listed in the infobox except those indicated as Optional. Optional parameters will not display if they are omitted or have a blank value.

  • conflict—the name of the conflict being described.
  • partofoptional—the larger conflict containing the event described in the article. For battles or campaigns, this should be the war during which the event takes place; for particularly large wars, this may include a theater. For wars, the parameter may be used to link to a larger group of wars. It may be necessary to insert "the" before the name of the war for proper grammar.
  • imageoptional—an image for the warbox. Note: do not use any other image parameters; the [[Image: and ]] are already included in the template.
  • sizeOptional—use to display any image size other than the default (300 pixels wide) size; omit this parameter to use the default size
  • captionoptional—the text to be placed below the image.
  • date—the date(s) of the conflict described. Convention is to give the actual date for battles and the years for wars, but this does not always apply.
  • location—the location of the conflict. For conflicts covering a wide area, a general description may be used.
  • result—the outcome of the conflict. Modifiers such as "inconclusive" or "decisive" may be used as necessary.
  • combatant1/combatant2—the parties participating in the conflict. This is most commonly the countries whose forces took part in the conflict; however, larger groups (such as alliances or international organizations) or smaller ones (such as particular units, formations, or groups) may be indicated if doing so improves reader understanding. When there is a large number of participants, it may be better to list only the three or four major groups on each side of the conflict, and to describe the rest in the body of the article.
  • commander1/commander2optional—the commanders of the military forces involved. For battles, this should include on-scene commanders (and other officers as necessary). For wars, only prominent or notable leaders should be listed. Ranks and position titles should be omitted. Note: the "commander2" parameter will only display if the "commander1" parameter has data or   in it.
  • strength1/strength2optional—the numerical strength of the units involved. It is generally not useful to provide unit names without giving an indication of numbers. Note: the "strength2" parameter will only display if the "strength1" parameter has data or   in it.
  • casualties1/casualties2optional—casualties suffered, including dead, wounded, missing, captured, and civilian deaths. Terms such as "dead" (or "killed"), "wounded", or "captured" should be used in place of abbreviations such as "KIA" or "POW". Note: the "casualties2" parameter will only display if the "casualties1" parameter has data or   in it.
  • notesoptional—list and explain any footnotes for the infobox here.
