The Democratic Republic of Valania is located in central Valanan, one of the Doranian sub-continents. Valania is bordered by Taereoca to the north, Labella and Ængelnia to the west, and Kassaten to the south. The Doranian Sea makes up the eastern boundry of Valania.

At one time, Valania included present-day Appias, Labella, Medinat Tzion, and Taereoca. The government no longer considers these former territories to be wayward provinces and has apparently given up on returning them to Valanian rule. In the time of the empire, Valania had control of territory in Sunamia. In addition, the former Civitas (present-day Schwerdt) was a long-standing colony during much of the fifteenth century.

Economy

The Valanian economy is centred mainly around primary production industries, notably mining. Strict bans on trade have now been removed, allowing Valania to trade its vast resources of sulphur, iron and precious metals. The economy no longer has to provide everything that the country needs, and the nation is enjoying an unprecedented periond of growth. Living standards are relatively low in Valania, but they are rising rapidly. Most of the mining is in the mountainous northern provinces; the south consists largely of rainforest that has been all but destroyed by farming, industry, and now civil war over the centuries. Much of it now resembles an arid wasteland.

Geography

Due to its equatorial climate, Valania enjoys a very warm climate. The most northwestern provinces (notably South Taeroc) buck this trend by virtue of the altitude of the Taeroc Mountains. Southern and eastern areas are by far the hottest, with some being practically a desert.

A thriving rainforest grows in the eastern regions. Sadly much of this is suffering from deforestation and pollution.

Culture

Valanian culture has evolved over several thousand years. Religion still plays a large part, and the church remains the centre of every village and town. In the Civil War many of these were damaged or destroyed, but the local priest remains the centre of every village's respect.

In the larger cities and business areas of Valans and Jalarel, the Valanian language has been almost completely replaced by Ingallish, due to the large influence of international commerce. But original Valanian still lives on in the provincial towns and smaller settlements. Many other foreign elements have begun to move into the major business areas as well, the most iconic of which is the Vamaran restaurant chain .

Society

Valanian society is very traditional in many aspects. The man is seen as the head of the family, and women have a subordinate role. This is gradually beginning to change under foreign influence. Valanians are generally considered to be friendly, ambitious and great lovers of good food. They are often stereotyped as being very arrogant, and in some cases this may be true!

The Valanian provinces are remarkably similar in terms of their people, due to the extremely long period of Valanian rule. This does not stop the people of each province claiming that theirs is the "best" in Valania, but it is definitely true that all Valanians owe more loyalty to the nation as a whole than to individual provinces.

The people of Valania are immensely proud of their nation and its antiquity. Valania is perhaps the oldest existing nation in the whole of Scandia, and was for a long time the most powerful. Valanians are aware of this, and some would like a return to those days.

Foreign Relations

Here is a list of nations with which Valania has foreign relations:

• Kassaten- Valania has very good relations with Kassaten, notably the Treaty of Jalarel, which is a trade liberalisation agreement between the two nations.
• Knabia- Valania's SpaceValania is a partner in the construction of the Wextik Space Station.
• Melka- Valania has had long-standing good relations with the Melkan Federation which, though marred by Valania's intervention in the Melkan War, remain strong today.
• Schwerdt- Schwerdt is a trade partner and ex-colony of Valania. Schwerdtan corporations are involved in the continued reconstruction of the city of Reluriaa.
• Taereoca- Relations between Valania and its ex-province are frosty at best. This is not helped by Taerocese warlords continually raiding Valania's borders and shipping. Recently Valania was allowed to use its navy to remove pirate warlords from Taerocese waters.
• Vamar- Valania's SpaceValania is a partner in the construction of the Wextik Space Station.
