The U-bahn, from the Teuvian Untergrundbahn which means underground railway, is the subway, or metro, system in Schwerdt's capital city of Kapitalstadt. The system opened in 1424 and now consists of 170 stations on nine subway lines, which have a total length of 144.2 kilometres.

Trains run every two to five minutes during peak hours, and every seven to 12 minutes for the rest of the day. More than a million people use the system every day.

The system's operator, Großberlin Verhkersverbund (Großberlin Transit Authority), is proud of its efficiency and safety record. There have been less than a dozen significant U-bahn accidents, resulting in only 3 fatalities and just over 100 injuries total.

Fares

The system is divided into three fare zones: center city (A), outer city (B), and suburbs (C). Fares may be paid for a single zone, zone AB or BC, or for all three zones. Children and disabled veterans are charged only half-fare.

The R-karte, the national identity document in Schwerdt which also serves as a debit card, is generally used to pay fares, eliminating the need for ticketing. Stations do have ticket vending machines, accepting Reichsmark currency and coins or the R-karte, which sell single-use, daily, or weekly fare cards. Commuters may subscribe to discounted fares for weekly, monthly, or annual periods. In any case, either the R-karte or the fare card must be used to access and exit the system. This method ensures collection of the appropriate fare while reducing the requirement for manual enforcement.
