Timeline of Valanian History

This is a timeline recording many of the major events in the history of Valania.

Pre-Imperial Era

• c.1000AE- City of Valans founded by Valen.
• c.552- First contact made between Valansians and Thesians. The Thesians begin colonising the area.
• 487- The Thesian despot Creos attempts to impose his own king upon Valans. In response, the Valansian League is formed. Creos is caught by surprise in his city and his army massacred.
• 485- The last Thesian city on mainland Valanan falls to the new "Valansian Empire". Fearing the invasion of Thesia, the Thesians surrender.

Imperial Era

• 484-The last king of Valans dies. His successor styles himself Emperor of Valania.
• 322-First attempt to conquer Taereoca fails.
• 300-Second invasion of Taereoca meets with partial success. Much of southern Taereoca comes under Imperial rule.
• 271-What is now northern Labella voluntarily comes under Imperial rule in order to escape the depredations of various northern kings.
• 265-The Valanian Empire begins a full-scale war with the kingdoms of northern Valanan.
• 249-The last enemy kingdom falls.
• 222-Northern Kassaten is captured by Imperial troops.
• 219-The rest of Kassaten falls. Valania now controls all of Valanan and Thesia with the exception of Taereoca.
• 208-Third invasion of Taereoca is a disaster. The emperor is slain and the rest of the Taeroc Mountains are lost.
• 186-Valania provides assistance to Appias in its wars with Medinat Tzion.
• 181-Medinat Tzion is added to the Empire.
• 162-Valania acquires colonies in Teuvia.
• 142-Attempts to expand Teuvian holdings are sharply rebuffed.
• 140-A surprise attack is launched upon Appias. It is easily captured. Cruisian cultists begin to spread throughout the Empire.
• 112-By now the influence of Cruisianism is becoming noticeable.
• 96-Fourth invasion of Taereoca is led by Titus Aurelius. The tribesmen are crushed and Taereoca joins the empire.
• 92-Emperor Titus II creates a permanent, professional force for the protection of the Empire, known as the Legions. Under Titus, the Valanian Empire reaches the height of its power.
• 90-The Imperial Palace is completed, replacing the older royal residence.
• 12-Cruisianity becomes the dominant religion in the Empire.
• 1CE-Emperor Mausulus discovers the bones of Cruis and converts to Cruisianity. A new calendar system is begun and construction of the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre commences in Valans.
• 10-The Basilica is completed.
• 26-Explorers discover the Knabian peninsula, and a small colony is founded.
• 176-Emperor Kalniron the Mad gives most of southern Valanan its independence.
• 222-All of southern Valanan under the control of the Kassatic Empire. The Valanian Emperor declares war in order to reduce Kassaten's power.
• 225-Valanians thrown out of Knabia.
• 227-Afer a mostly successful campaign, the Valanian armies are outmaneuvered at the Battle of Halland and crushed. This marks the beginning of the Empire's decline.
• 228-Treaty of Linberg signed. Valania and Kassaten promise to avoid war with one another for one thousand years. Valanians made to pay substantial reparations.
• 229-Constant Frescus founds the Frescian Empire in Thesia. The shattered Legions are powerless to prevent him.
• 246-First Valanian Civil War as five Legions attempt to dethrone the Emperor. They are defeated.
• 247-Second Valanian Civil War. The Emperor is defeated by a rebellion in Valans and flees north. He returns from Taerecoa with a large army, but is beaten again and slain. A new Emperor declared.
• 298-Year of Five Emperors. Many Emperors are assasinated by power-hungry rivals.
• 299-Colonies in Teuvia overrun by barbarians and lost.
• 300-Garrison of Appias attempts to seize the imperial throne. They fail, but Appias becomes independent.
• 329-Medinat Tzion throws out the Legions and declares independence.
• 332-Third Valanian Civil War. The whole of northern Valanan is in rebellion. Help is called for from Kassaten, but refused.
• 341-After a long and bloody conflict, the last rebellion is crushed.
• 400-The Black Plague spreads across most of northern Valanan. Many die.
• 421-Fourth Valanian Civil War caused by the summary execution of the entire Senate by the emperor.
• 423-The sadistic emperor is assassinated by his own bodyguards, but the war continues.
• 424-There are now at least twelve individuals claiming the title of emperor.
• 426-Several would-be emperors are ambushed by their own people in northern Valanan. Northern Valanan frees itself from imperial rule.
• 428-The war at last ends.
• 443-The Iudeans invade southern Valania. Legions are called away from Taereoca to help them, but they never return.
• 456-Labella becomes free.
• 535-The Iudeans push further north. They become a noble class in much of central Valanan.
• 536-The last of the Legions are returned to Valansia in order to defend the capital. The rest of the empire has been lost.
• 541-Burning of the Imperial Palace and death of the last emperor, Gaius XII.
