The Republic of Tarej is one of the twenty-five nominally sovereign constituent territorial republics of the Confederation of Haromszeki States.

Contents

Origins

As an independent Duchy in the 1200's and 1300's, Tarej was modestly populated along the Jakobrieka River, but the mountainous belt at its north was virtually empty of citizens. With today's better roads and railways, even the upland valleys all have a scattering of villages.

The name "Tarej" has been in use for over hundreds of years for almost the same political entity in the Sedyvici Horskaa and Jakobrieka valley. Most Haromszeki pronounce the name with two syllables, second accesnted, as "tar-EDGE". Some Loirisian-speakers soften the "j" a bit to "tar-EZH". The name has been a proper noun as far back as recorded - it does not appear to derive from any local-language noun or verb. There were families named Tarej many hundred years ago, but it is not known whether the place or the people came first.

Government

Tarej is a representative democracy. The prime minister of the legislature acts as both chief of state and chief of government.

Geography

Tarej is at the northern edge of the Haromszeki States, second-easternmost, and the second-highest of all the Haromszeks. Tarej has but two of the highest fifteen peaks in Hz -- Vysocina and Vrcholsce have the rest. It ranges from impenetrable highland wilderness along most of its Sapmi border, to settled river-basin farmland at the south. The yearly Vesna rains and spring snowmelt provide most of the republic's water; the rest of the year tending toward dry weather and smaller watercourses dry up altogether. The uplands below about 4000 meters are heavily forested, where logging has not recently stripped hillsides.
