The Senate (properly, the Senate and People of Valania, or Senatus Populusque Valanie) is Valania's governing body. It is headed by the Second Consul, and, while the Proconsul is the nominal head of state, the real power is in the hands of the Senate. Full details of the Senate's workings can be found in the Constitution of Valania.

Since the refounding of the Senate in 1536, the Senators have coalesced into five political parties (here it must be emphasised that such parties have no standing under the Constitution, and that no member of any party may be forced to follow the party line against their will- this is in contrast to many other countries). By far the most powerful is the Democratic League, which holds just over half of all Senate seats. There is also the Cruisian Coalition, which seeks global peace through charity and Cruisian kindness, and the Liberal Party, which campaigns for individual and social freedom. The Nationalist Party views Valania as a cut above the rest internationally and would like things to stay that way. Finally, there is the Valanian Imperial Party, a fascist group that aims for the return of the international power that Valania once held.
