The provinces of Kassaten were introduced during the reign of Rutger Moldrecht. Nowadays, as Kassaten is a quite centralized and unitary state, its geographically large provinces have comparatively little power and are largely ceremonial (quite unlike the so called ‘Intendances’, which usually are geographically tiny and de facto independent regions).

Nevertheless, each of the provinces has a governor (called Rijkscommissaris, appointed by the Stadhouders) and a provincial parliament (Provinciale Staten).

The main part of the legal, political and financial powers are actually exerted by the national government, instead of by the provincial governments which are mere administrative capacities ensuring the connection between the state and the municipalities. The municipalities, for their part, are directed by a council (gemeenteraad) elected by the people and a mayor (burgemeester) named by the sovereign.
