Valanian Involvement

Despite its imperialist foreign policy, Valania played little part in the early stages of the war. It was bound by the Concords of Ostiae to provide technical assistance to the Melkans, and engineers in Melka continued to assist with the development of new military hardware.

However, in late May 1519 events took a decisive turn. The Valanians had become increasingly concerned about the safety of their engineers in such an unstable situation. So, the nearby Cruisia battlegroup was sent to pick them up. Unfortunately the Melkan coastal defence network mistook them for hostile UFA ships and opened fire. The squadron scattered, but the destroyer NV Cruisia was hit amidships by an SSM and soon sank.

When news of the disaster reached Valans, a diplomatic crisis broke out. The Melkans stubbornly denied the incident, misled by the fact that a UFA destroyer had been sunk earlier that day. Valania's engineers were brought back by plane. Melka retaliated with a trade embargo. Eventually, on June 2, Valania declared war against the Melkan Federation. Large numbers of aircraft were moved into UFA airbases, and the might of the Valanian navy was deployed to the Ingallian Ocean.

Valania's fleet held a stranglehold over Melka's shipping, worsened by continual air raids on Melkan ports. This was a key factor in the collapse of Melka's resistance on the ground to UFA attacks.
