Maakos is a city in Valania.

History

Under the Valanian Empire, Maakos was one of the most important cities in the empire, as it was the centre of the ivory trade. After the Empire fell apart, Maakos became a kingdom ruled by men who could trace their descent back to an obscure relative of the last Emperor. By the simple method of invading anyone smaller than it, Maakos was soon the main power in central Valanan.

After the rise of Gaius Pontifex, the King of Maakos wholeheartedly embraced the new order and gave his crown to the churchman. His son and heir was not at all happy about this turn of events, and after leading an unsuccessful revolution, he fled across the seas to Venda.

Meanwhile, Maakos and Valansia formed an alliance as they fought the wars of religion. One by one the other kingdoms and petty states of the former Empire fell, until at last the Thesians, who had been their greatest enemies, gave up the war and victory was proclaimed. The Kingdom of Maakos then became part of the Glorious Theocracy of Valania.

In 1253 a terrible earthquake struck central Valanan. This, combined with the arrival of the invading Ingallish, caused the city to be abandoned and it fell into ruin. Eventually after the Ingallish were driven out, Maakos was reestablished, though much of the ruins remain as a shrine to the city's former glory.
